Understanding Victoria's New Vacant Land Tax

Victoria's Vacant Residential Land Tax is designed to address housing affordability and encourage landowners to develop or utilise vacant land.

This tax imposes an additional fee on landowners who leave their residential properties vacant for extended periods. Effective from 2025, the tax is based on the property's occupancy status as of January 1, 2024. Landowners who fail to occupy or utilise their properties for at least six months of the previous year may be subject to this tax.
